Our First Feelings when we want to the Mkombozi Centre

)The compound was bigger than we thought it would be.

)In the middle of the compound was a small building.
)Only a few of the children were there, the rest had gone to church.

)We thought they wouldn't be able to read and write but they have lessons at the centre.

)We thought that they slept on a bed but really they slept on mats in their classrooms.

)We thought that 1500/- Tanzanian Shillings (about $25US ) was a very small amount of money to feed about 50 children for a whole week.

)We thought that they would wash in a bath but they had to clean themselves in the river.

)We never thought that they were such good artists and could draw such good pictures.

)They had two shelves of English reading books but very little of the books they had were in Swahili.

)They were very good actors. In their play they showed us how hard it is to live on the streets with bullies with people stealing and hitting you all the time.

)In the two classrooms they had one of them had a blackboard and the other had a pinboard where they put their pictures each week.

)The compound was so full of maize that there wasn't any room to even play football.

)They were doing the artwork outside  because there wasn't any room to do it in the classrooms.

)They use a lot of things for their art that we would throw away such as toilet rolls or plastic cups.

15) We thought that their store would be a lot bigger but the room was very small and full of things they use.
